Really having fun designing some new workshops for the next few months. Am crazy about the new texturing mats especially my new one which is quite big and has butterflies in the design.... so versitile because I use these with lacy type icing to make single butterfly decorations. Putting a thin drape around the top join and adding big bow or flowers... not sure, will let my facebook friends tell me which to do!. taking a vote

Feeling a bit inspired today ... time to create some new designs for my workshops (that's the excuse anyway, for having such a messy studio today!!  lol

The three beginners, 4 week evening courses .... sugar modelling, cakes, piping with royal icing/frills/pulled flowers will run repeatedly throughout the year as there always seems to be new, up coming cakey folks wanting them.
Some in response to many comments I see repeatedly:

A word about making cakes for other than family members............

Have read soooooooooooo many times on various forums about cake makers who have spent ages on a cake then no one's collected/paid! or said design wasn't what they wanted..... or worst still... said it arrived damaged or collapsed etc !!!
One simple way to avoid this hassle.......... make sure the recipient signs a booking form agreeing to:

Pay deposit on booking   (you can make it a non-refundable one or refunded ONLY if cancelled giving you e.g months notice ... so you haven't bought ingredients/refused other orders, always give a receipt)
ALSO
Sign agreeing description/size etc of described cake ordered, best to put a pic/sketch on form too
AND
Never hand over a cake without .... Taking a finished cake photo and  recipient signing to say received as ordered AND in good condition if they collect from you
OR
If leaving cake at a venue .... I used to call venue to agree a time when I could set it up in its permanent position so no one else had to move it/drop it!! take photo, get someone in charge e.g hotel manager, to take a good look at cake then sign a disclaimer saying received in perfect condition etc.

COVER YOURSELVES there are some strange folks out there. I had a wedding co-coordinator push my tiered cake several times then blamed it on me when the tiers fell!! luckily brides Mun saw so knew who's fault it was!  It can be a stressful business so protect your selves and reputation.
Get in touch anytime if you need any help.. will if I can!

What I offer:

Mainly on weekends there will continue to be workshops for intermediate level students including those wanting to continue after doing the 4 week beginners courses. At weekend workshops you can expect ... flowers for wedding and other cakes, figure modelling (shaping limbs, hands, clothes etc ), cute animal modelling, how to stack a tiered cake, new cup cake designs with fondant and lots of other fun stuff. If there's something specific you'd like that's not listed let me know, may be able to put a class together that includes that. Or if you have a friend or two who'd come too I will give a class just for you, on a date you fancy whenever poss' ..... just let me know
Have a productive, happy day you lot :-)

Model making class

Mondays evening class went well. The students worked very hard crafting tiny little details in order to complete a Christening cake topper of a baby in a walnut shell cradle. This is my own design I make and sell the little  shell molds, wanted an alternative design to the usual cradle and bootees.
Corrina needs her topper very soon for her childes cake so wanted to make a baby boy in her cradle whilst the others made tiny mice. Drives you mad handling such teeny pieces of sugar paste but well worth it when you see the results.

If anyone is interested this course repeats next Wednesday 7pm - 9pm £70 everything included in the fee. 2 places left. If you'd like a rigid, non-toxic walnut mould that makes a realistic shell 5cm x 4cm @ 5.00, free p&p  let me know heather@sweetart.co.uk

Am looking forward to tomorrows class on my sugar modelling course. Got some very nice, fun ladies attending, it's relaxed, friendly and fun but I still aim to cram as much info into their heads as possible!
Four weeks, one evening a week, doing mad things with sugar paste, not the fondant type that you cover cakes with but sugar modelling paste, often called Mexican paste. This is basically like fondant/roll out icing but holds a shape much better, is more elastic and dries hard after 3 days plus.

So many students ask me why the models they've tried to make have not held up, held their shape and broken so easily..... this is why, the paste is to soft etc, and really  designed for coating cakes not the best thing for model making.
Modelling paste is fab, I love it and used it to make cake top models and its what I used to make my huge wacky wedding sculptures.

If you'd like a no obligation copy of the modelling paste recipe that I use just drop me an email from this page with model paste recipe in the subject line.    Sugar modelling courses.. repeated throughout the year
